WORKING THE CROWD
Emily moved among the mourners looking for a familiar face. Fifty years is a long time to roll back in one afternoon. Among the mourners, would Emily recognize the little one she cherished but lost track of years ago. Emily realistically reminded herself that she is over 80. The child would be over 60. An obituary had drawn Emily to the cemetery. The service was about to begin. Perhaps memories are better buried too.
Suddenly, she spied her little darling. Emily shyly edged closer. Would the little one remember? Their eyes locked, a smile of recognition and the years dissolved in the October sunshine of their embrace. Nothing had been forgotten. When God knits hearts they don’t unravel. Reuniting lives is God’s specialty.
Reunions at gravesides are healthy. Tears provide places for new loves to grow and forgotten loves to be replenished.
Reflecting later, the child said, “I saw you weaving through the crowd and wondered who you were. Then I thought about Jesus gathering children to Himself as He “worked the crowd” . You were “working the crowd” looking for me and once again I felt cherished by you…Thank you Emily and thank you Jesus.
In the crowd of wounded hearts we meet everyday, is there an embrace that you have been assigned to deliver? It is never too late. Emily is over 80 and still “working the crowd” for Jesus. Sixty year olds need to feel cherished too!
PS. God smiles on those “working the crowd” for Him.
God’s embrace is personal and always available.
