PHILPOT BEAR

My name is Philpot Bear. I live in “clean-air” Vermont where the grass is greener and the trees are more lush than anywhere else in America. My home is dug into the side of a lovely hill with a view for miles.

You can easily recognize me in the woods. I am the only bear you can find wearing wire spectacles,  a knit cap and matching sweater.

I have a reputation of giving wisdom wherever I go. I am proud to be an intelligent, intellectual bear. I always have my nose in a book.  Last week, someone groaned when I suggested there was going to be another snowfall after the magnolia trees budded. Sure enough, I was right.

Last winter, I suggested everybody pile in extra wood for their fireplaces because the winter was going to be longer than usual. They remembered my advice when the wood was almost gone. I guess I should keep my knowledge to myself, but I think knowledge is from God and should be shared.

I am often alone. Most of the kids at school teased me and call me “FULLPOT” Bear. They said I was fat and full of myself. I cried for days when I found out what they were saying.

BLUE BELL said they were jealous because I was so clever.

BLUE BELL is the only friend I have. She was always kind to me. She sometimes asks me to help her with her homework. She respects my wisdom and knowledge. She agrees that knowledge comes from God.

This Spring during the big mud slides, Blue Bell called to ask my advice.  The rains were threatening to flood the neighborhood. I suggested that they bulldoze a trench around the school yard and divert the water into the lake. Everyone thought the trench would look silly. Blue Bell passed the information on and the neighborhood was saved from flooding. I was happy to give away my idea.

If Blue Bell had not been my friend, the neighborhood would have been destroyed. I guess my intelligence was valuable after all.

PONDER-1.  Unique people create unique ideas.

                  2.   Learning can be a daily experience.

3.      Everyone has friendship potential.

4.      Never forget your Source of Knowledge.
