STRONG KNEES
“What is Granny doing?” little Bobby whispered, glancing into the guestroom.
Bobby and Great –Grandma were having a sleep over at Nanny and Poppa’s house.
“Great-Grandma is praying.”
“On her knees? Beside her bed?” Bobby whispered. He was full of questions.
“Yes Honey,” said Nanny, “Granny prays that way. She taught all five of us to kneel and pray when we were little. Your Daddy prayed like that when he was your age too.”
“Why did Daddy stop, Nanny? Do you still know how to do it? Is it only for kids and great grandmothers?” Bobby was full of questions.
“No Bobby. Praying is for all ages. Great Grandma has had more practice than the rest of us. In fact, I don’t think she will ever stop praying. She wouldn’t think of getting into bed without kneeling to pray at night. She used to say, “Prayer changes things.”
A reminiscent smile crossed Nanny’s face.
“I wonder what she prays about?” asked Bobby.
“I think she prays for all of us,” replied Nanny.
“WOW” exclaimed Bobby. “I should thank Great-Grandma for that.”
“Last Easter,” Bobby recalled,” When we were at your church, I saw lots of old people kneeling. I thought their legs were tired. Now I know they were praying. I guess that is what knees are for!
Old people must have strong knees.”
Job 4:4-“Your words have upheld him who was stumbling and you have made firm the feeble knees.” Luke 11:1 – “Lord, teach us to pray.” I Thes. 5:17 – “Pray without ceasing” Proverbs 22:6 – “Teach a child to choose the right path, and when he is old he will remain upon it.”
“Let’s say our prayers tonight the way Great-Grandma does” Nanny suggested.

PS. Many years later, Pastor Bobby recalls the day Nanny taught him to kneel to pray.
Prayer does change things. Ask Bobby’s Great-Grandma.
